Vail to Consider “Fire Free Five” Regulations; Offers Funding

The regulations would require a five-foot-wide zone of non-combustible landscaping around all buildings in Vail.

Vail Fire and Emergency Services (VFES) is reaching out to the community to provide information, gather feedback and answer questions regarding a proposal under consideration to help property owners protect their structures, as well as all residents and guests, from the threat of wildfire. “Fire Free Five” regulations would require a five-foot-wide zone of non-combustible landscaping around all buildings in Vail.

Community members are encouraged to learn how the proposal can help protect the town and assist with property insurability while maintaining attractive landscaping. Program details and a short survey for Vail residents can be found at www.EngageVail.com/firefreefive.

VFES is also offering the following opportunities to provide input:

  • Representatives from the department will be available to provide information and answer questions at the Town of Vail Community Picnics, taking place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on July 8 at Bighorn Park and on Aug. 12 at Donovan Pavilion.

  • An open house is scheduled for 4:30 to 6 p.m. on July 10 in the Vail Town Council Chambers, which will include a short presentation on Fire Free Five at 5 p.m. followed by time for questions and answers.

  • VFES will host a virtual “ask me anything” video session at 10 a.m. on July 14. Register at https://vail.zoom.us/j/89581375360 or by using Zoom meeting ID number 895 8137 5360.

While a Fire Free Five zone is already required for new construction and significant additions, the department is recommending townwide adoption of the standards. Implementation is proposed to take place over a three-year period.

In addition, VFES is once again offering financial support to property owners within the town who voluntarily undertake projects that result in a five-foot non-combustible zone around an entire building. Eligible expenses for reimbursement include materials and labor, and funds are available on a first-come, first-served basis. For complete program details, including a landscaping guide and the application, visit www.vail.gov/firefreefive.

Fire Chief Mark Novak says adhering to Fire Free Five standards is the most critical step property owners can take to protect their structure from a wildfire. Creation of a non-combustible buffer helps keep embers from igniting a home and helps prevent devastating structure-to-structure ignition.

Adoption of townwide Fire Free Five regulations will require review and consideration of an ordinance by the Vail Town Council. For more information, contact Paul Cada at pcada@vail.gov or at 970-477-3475.
