The Town of Vail has updated its Emergency Evacuation Plan, which includes important instructions for residents and visitors, modernized procedures, and lessons learned from recent emergency management experiences. The plan is available for review at www.vail.gov/evac. 

The plan serves as a guide for emergency responders on how evacuations are initiated, organized and carried out. Key updates include the designation of Evacuation Check-in Centers outside of Vail to improve safety and reduce congestion.

• West Evacuation: Eagle River Center, 971 Fairgrounds Rd. in Eagle
• East Evacuation: Silverthorne Recreation Center, 430 Rainbow Rd. in Silverthorne

“We have learned many lessons from recent fires,” said Police Chief Ryan Kenney. “The Vail Police Department’s emphasis will be on traffic control rather than door-to-door notification, allowing for more efficient movement of residents and visitors.”

The plan also identifies Emergency Evacuation Bus Stops to support individuals without personal transportation, particularly those in neighborhoods with high density and reduced parking.

“We looked at locations where it would be efficient for people on foot trying to get out of danger,” said Fire Chief Mark Novak. “By focusing on the areas where people don’t have their own vehicles, we have a better chance of succeeding and getting people to safety.”

Green signs will identify both the emergency bus stops and the nine preplanned Temporary Fire Refuge Areas, which may be used if evacuation is not possible. These include large fields and parking structures.

“We still want people to evacuate early,” Novak said. “We don’t want people to wait and depend on the temporary fire refuge areas. The message remains, ‘get out early.’ If you think you are in danger, leave. Don't call 911 and ask if you should leave.”

All residents and guests are strongly encouraged to subscribe to EC Alert at www.ecalert.org, the area's emergency alert system. During an evacuation, the Vail Public Safety Communications Center also will utilize emergency call-back notifications, known as Reverse 911. Evacuation information will be posted to the Eagle County Public Safety Information website at www.ecemergency.org. Messages will contain real time event information and emergency notifications.
