Speed enforcement cameras installed in two locations in Vail are nearing the end of a required 30-day warning period, with the issuance of citations slated to begin next week. Cameras monitoring traffic both eastbound and westbound on the North Frontage Road at the pedestrian crosswalk near Safeway in West Vail will generate citations starting Nov. 16. A camera monitoring westbound traffic on the South Frontage Road near the Vail Transportation Center will generate citations beginning on Nov. 22.
The Town of Vail Police Department implemented the Automated Vehicle Identification System (AVIS) to improve traffic safety, reduce speeding and enhance enforcement efficiency in high-risk areas. Approved by the Vail Town Council in June 2025, the program authorizes the use of AVIS in two areas, operated under contract with Dacra Tech, LLC. These systems automatically detect speeding violations and record photographs of the vehicle and license plate, enabling accurate and consistent enforcement. Advance warning signs are posted at least 300 feet before each camera location, notifying drivers that automated enforcement is in use.
For a first offense of less than 10 miles per hour over the posted speed limit, a written warning may be issued. Subsequent or more serious violations may result in a $40 fine. Notices of violation will be mailed to the registered owner within 30 days for in-state or 60 days for out-of-state vehicles and will include information on how to pay or contest the citation.
The system’s operational data and financial performance will be reviewed after three months to ensure accountability and transparency.
