Nestled in the heart of the Colorado Rockies, Vail Fire and Emergency Services responds to structure fires, wildland incidents, highway emergencies, technical rescues, hazardous materials calls and medical emergencies across one of the most challenging environments in the state.

Established in 1964 as an all-volunteer department, Vail Fire and Emergency Serivces grew alongside the early days of Vail. The department evolved into a full-time paid fire department, operating out of three fire stations, located in East Vail, Vail Village and West Vail.

Today, Vail Fire and Emergency Services serve a population of about 5,000 year-round residents, and 20,000 guests daily. VFEM responds to approximately 2,000 incidents in the Town of Vail each year.

VFES responds to incidents on I-70 from mile marker 171 to 190; incidents occurring on the surrounding White River National Forest; and several neighborhoods that are outside the incorporated limits of the Town of Vail as well as the Vail Mountain Resort.

VFES provides and receives automatic and mutual aid with all fire districts in Eagle County. VFES is a founding member of the Mountain Area Mutual Aid program which includes Eagle, Summit, Garfield, Pitkin, Routt, Lake and Grand counties. 

Call of the Year Award 

In 2025, it was a joint effort by Vail Fire and Emergency Services, alongside of Eagle County Paramedics Service, that earned them The Call of the Year Award - given by the Eagle County Public Safety Council to an organization or employees who respond to an out-of-the-ordinary call or an incident that is unusual or rises to an exceptional level of public interest.

Vail's team received the award for a massive accident on Vail Pass involving two semis.
