The Municipal Chain Law Ordinance enhances winter safety by requiring all vehicles traveling on Vail Pass to comply with chain traction requirements during winter conditions.

The ordinance mirrors Colorado's state Chain Law but imposes steeper penalties. A $1,500 fine may be issued to drivers operating without chains when conditions warrant, which is three times the standard state fine. Commercial vehicles that block Vail Pass due to failure to use chains are subject to a $2,650 fine, more than double the state's $1,000 penalty for similar violations.

Patrol Officers will continue to monitor compliance and educate drivers. The regulation is intended to reduce road closures and improve emergency response times on this critical stretch of I-70 during winter months.
